Our Services

Mentoring

Our mentoring service provides prisoners with a mentor while they are serving their sentence at HMP Wormwood Scrubs. Their mentor will visit them weekly/fortnightly while they are inside, meet them at the gate on the day of their release and then continue to mentor them once they have been released.

Our mentees can apply for a mentor themselves or can be referred to us by departments and organisations within the prison e.g. The Chaplaincy, Probation, Education. Our Outreach workers will complete an assessment with all referrals, determining their needs, level of risk and suitability for the mentoring scheme. If necessary, our Psychotherapist will provide brief therapy to further assess their risk before we match them with a mentor.

Meet and Greet

We have recently set up a new meet and greet service for anyone that applies for a mentor, but does not have enough of his sentence left to be met inside the prison. The meet and greeter will support them on the day of their release from prison and this support may continue in the community if the client would like a mentor.

In 2013 we were part of a consortium that successfully won the Tri-Borough Reducing Re-offending bid. As part of this service – Starting Over – our mentors are helping to meet clients living within Hammersmith & Fulham, Kensington & Chelsea and the City of Westminster at the gate on the day of their release and escort them to services, aiming to meet their primary need.

One of our key priorities is to provide support for our Mentors. In order to do this, our Mentors are divided in to four Support Groups. Each group is supervised by one of our Outreach Workers. Additionally, we have two Psychotherapists who provide support for mentors who are facing any issues concerning their mentoring relationships.

Becoming a Volunteer

If you would like to become an Inside Out volunteer, please download the application form below and send it to us. We will collect two references for you and then invite you for an interview. If both parties are happy to proceed, we will invite you to attend our Mentor Induction Training, which takes place over two Saturdays. (Please note that at all stages of the volunteer application process, we will assess your suitability for the role of mentor, including throughout the Mentor Induction Training).

Once you have successfully completed the Mentor Induction Training, you will need to get security cleared by HMP Wormwood Scrubs. This includes completing an online Security Vetting Pack and a Security Training afternoon session. If for some reason, you are unable to complete the prison’s security vetting, we may suggest that you become a Meet and Greeter as part of our Meet and Greet Service.
